Our Yacht: s/v Island Time, Ericson 38

Island Time’s a great boat and it’s hard to find fault in her.  No bad sailing manners that I know of, functional deck and cockpit layout, spacious accommodations below, quality build, and eye-catching lines that  always get compliments wherever we go.  She is a 1990 Ericson 38, built the year before Ericson Yachts folded and Pacific Seacraft bought the molds and took over production.  The Ericson 38 was a hugely successful boat with a long production run.

EricsonYachts.org has a wealth of information on all things Ericson Yachts related.  One of the website moderators was the mainsheet trimmer on Ted Turner’s winning yacht during the 1979 Fastnet race.  He recently sailed his Ericson 32 solo to Kauai and back.

Wide side decks make moving around deck easy.  The hull to deck joint is glassed together with alternating layers, essentially making it one monolithic structure.

Our layout is more recent than this in that the galley is not angled, and the Yanmar engine is beneath the companionway steps, not under the galley sink.

The cockpit is roomy and functional.  Nice details like the curved seating in the back, and chamfered edges make the boat comfortable while heeled over.

Deep anchor locker, windlass, 60-ft of chain, 350 ft of rode, and a washdown pump make anchoring easy.

She has a tall rig with a lot of sail, perfect for lighter air.  She currently has a 130 roller genoa and full batten main.  We typically start reefing around 15-20 knots.

Engine access is excellent.  Here I am replacing all of the hoses on the Yanmar diesel engine.

  1. The Ericson 38 is a nice boat. We looked at one in Bellingham last year, before ending up going with a C&C Landfall 38. Looks like you bought her from Seacraft. I walk by there almost every week on my lunch break (partly just to “window shop”).

    1. Can’t go wrong with a Landfall. We looked at a smaller Landfall, but it was in too rough of shape for us. We actually bought Island Time from her original slip in Eagle Harbor from Swiftsure Yachts. The photo above on Lake Union was from a weekend trip we made through the locks during a heat wave. The nice folks at Seacraft were having an event, and they let us tie up for the night. They used to be an Ericson dealer, so it was good getting some insights from them on our boat..
